British Gas launch solar panel scheme

August 26th, 2010 Blog ,

British Gas are the latest company to launch an offer to entice homeowners to invest in solar panels.

The claim is that people can save up to £1,000 per year under the Feed In Tariff scheme launched by the government (we covered this here) – the idea being that for every KWh of electricity generated through green/solar means earns the homeowner 41.3p

British Gas offer 2 schemes:

  • Rent-a-roof, where you essentially get the panels installed for free, and can use the energy generated from them – but British Gas keep the Feed In Tariff money for 25 years.
  • Or you install the panels yourself, and British Gas offer you a 2-year interest-free loan to do it. You then own the panels, collect the Feed In Tariff money yourself, and benefit from the green energy.

It’s estimated that the average roof will cost around £10,000-£15,000 to put panels on (depending on the size of the roof).

There’s more on solar panels and other places to buy them here.
